Nungalinya’s Family and Community
Studies has
entered a funding partnership with Christian Blind
Mission International to improve community capacity in
caring for Indigenous people with disabilities. This
project has a focus on training and supporting carers
working in various community positions with people who
have disabilities.
Students are expected to
commence training at the College in 2008
and the program will continue through to 2011.
A
project officer and Yolngu teacher have been researching
the needs of East Arnhem
communities in the area of
disability, developing
relationships with a network of organisations and
individuals able to assist with employment and
mentoring. Avenues for training and support will
include:
-
Support workers caring for aged and disabled in
women’s centres
-
Inclusion support assistants working with disabled
students
-
Early childhood workers caring for children with
development delays or disabilities
