Creating Indigenous Futures Disability
Creating Indigenous Futures
Creating Indigenous Futures has been developed to
address a recognised need for alternative arrangements
for disengaged Indigenous young people. The program
aims to provide a supportive environment in which
Indigenous young people choose to access further
studies, training and employment.
Creating Indigenous Futures offers participants a
diverse full-time alternative education program
developed by Nungalinya College Incorporated in
partnership with local Registered Training
Organisations, education providers and support
agencies. The program consists of learning program
incorporating enterprise initiatives and personal
support. This holistic approach to a young person’s
development assists to identify and address both the
educational and social barriers young Indigenous people
are experiencing and that restrict effective
participation in mainstream education, training and
employment.
The program is offered to Indigenous young people in the
Darwin and Palmerston area aged 16 to 19 years. The
young people have been disengaged from mainstream
education, training or employment and are often referred
from agencies including Correctional Services,
Diversion, Job Network and Alternative Education
Provision (DET).
Upon completion off the program participants will be
able to:
-
make an informed decision about their future
-
define own education, training or employment pathway
-
confidently progress to further studies or training
-
participate in an entry level employment program
-
develop basic employability skills
-
be more competitive in the local labour market
-
contribute to own self sufficiency through continued
involvement in a business enterprise
-
resolve personal issues in a positive manner
